Why You Should Be Wearing Nature This Spring

The landscape holds sensory delights in the rich beauty and diversity of the natural world. The colour, fragrance and movement of flowers are captivating and often symbolic; they have become emblematic of love, joy, healing and growth in our consciousness.

The natural world is fascinating in its diversity and we are the more aware of the need to cherish it with the recent anti-plastic campaign. Perhaps this is why one of the biggest jewellery trends for Spring/Summer 2019 sees flora and fauna as key motifs, and why you should be wearing nature too, this spring!

The Oscars this year saw many of the guests adorned with exquisite jewellery influenced by nature such as Helen Mirren wearing a diamond and sapphire necklace and matching earrings and both Charlize Theron and Miley Cyrus wearing serpentine necklaces.

An example of this enduring trend could also be seen when the Duchess of Sussex wore a pair of gold butterfly earrings and a gold bracelet that came from Princess Diana’s own collection on her first day in Sydney. Another would be her choice of Gold Peepal Leaf earrings with heart-shaped leaves which are symbols of fertility.

Over the centuries people have admired, cherished or even worshipped many of natures natural forms and creatures. Insects and botanicals were hugely prominent features of this, often symbolic and immortalised in paintings, stone carvings and many in precious metals and gemstones.

They adorned the most elaborate and extravagant resting places of the powerful pharaohs of Egypt to the primitive caves inhabited by early man.

Historically, our love and fascination of both has grown with examples found in study drawings and prints between 1500 and 1900  and are now hugely sought after and have influenced modern day design in many ways in fashion, jewellery, millenary, haberdashery, textiles, wallpapers and ceramics to name just a few.

Perhaps through time, we have hoped to capture something of this powerful, indescribable beauty that can been seen in these natural forms. The colours of a butterfly’s wings may perhaps be expressed as you hold a sapphire to the morning sunshine.

The enchanting changing colours of a peony as it bursts into life and fades through the spring until outshone by summer tones may be somehow admired in a well cut ruby, garnet or even red diamond.

The romanticism and possibilities are endless, as the spectrum of colour is incredible in every variety of plant and every species of insect.

The delicate nature of some species continued survival, makes it even more important that we continue to cherish and highlight their fragile existence in any way. Celebrities today may be often keen to show their affinity to nature by wearing symbols and representations of these in an attempt to try and raise awareness. We may all perhaps do our bit and could be as little as wearing a necklace or ring that starts a conversation among friends.

Today, we continue to use botanicals, insects, birds and animals to influence our design of beautiful jewellery. All can be designed by the individual themselves, worn to admire, symbolise and ultimately ‘make a that statement’ which may matter more than you think in today’s ever-changing and the fragile world around us and why we should all be wearing nature this spring.
