Diamond Cocktail Necklace Winner’s Delight

There was a heavy flurry before Christmas, not from the fluffy white stuff, but of entries for the luxury diamond necklace landing at Biagio the Jeweller.

width=640

Fevered anticipation hung in the air. Who, among the 4,200 entrants to the prize draw, was going to be lucky enough to win this beauty, worth £2850, to dangle around their neck on Christmas Day? Had your husband or partner secretly entered, planning a great surprise for you to open on Christmas Day? Were you already musing on what occasion you would wear this magnificent piece? Much fun and chatter filled the day on which the winner was to be announced, and a name was ceremoniously drawn with great aplomb!

Mrs Harwood from Leeds could not have been more delighted: “To receive an email on 21st December just before Christmas truly was the highlight of my year. To say it made my Christmas is an understatement! she said. “I found out about Biagio purely by chance when shopping for my son’s wedding in October. I have been in a wheelchair since 2012, and although I would have loved to collect this in person, I simply cannot make the trip.”

The magnificent pear-cut green quartz and diamond necklace, designed by Biagio himself, was collected from the Bicester store by Mrs Harwood’s son and daughter-in-law.

Looking to spin an update into your jewellery? whether delicate or bold, jewellery is the instinctive wow-factor update to your sartorial elegance. Dainty trinkets and small interesting details in jewellery continue to show the best things come in small packages. We have seen the trend of stacking rings grow over the years to a more simple, softer note focussing on the subtlety of mixing up ring shapes for interest.

In the day we look for treasures to wear, not to the same big, dynamic extent of evening wear but jewellery that still flashes our identity. A piquant colour dropped into a pair of earrings gives an edge to the day. Conceptual necklaces, discrete but powerful show your unrivalled passion for creativity. Initials in different fonts and finishes and pretty little gems continue to illustrate signature styling. A milky, facetted opal gives a natural stone look to echo the gentle, cosiness of knits and sweaters. Earrings are close to the ear with a quirk on the finish, simple silver with an erroneous hammered finish or languid drop-off jewels give a glamour pop.

Where did you pop the question? The all-important place where you propose is one of the ultimate romantic decisions. Steven thought long and hard about his location for the perfect proposal and it was all in the detail.

Where was the proposal?

Steven proposed to Amanda at St Anthony’s chapel, in Edinburgh. The chapel is reminiscent of an ancient castle ruin and is the only building in the central area of Edinburgh’s Holyrood Park. It stands on a dramatic rock formation high about St Margaret’s Loch with extraordinary views over Edinburgh and the river Forth.

‘I chose this special place as it is secluded overlooking Edinburgh. It was perfect’. said Steven. On arriving in Edinburgh they ascended the lofty height of Arthurs seat and continued on to reach St Antony’s Chapel. Steven got down on one knee, whilst enjoying the panoramic views of Edinburgh, and proposed with his diamond engagement ring just as he had planned.

The deets in the planning of the ring

‘Amanda frequently walked by Biagio the Jewellers and loved their jewellery. One weekend I casually hinted we should visit the jewellers to have a look around. We looked at rings and she tried on a few engagement rings, one in particular we both liked. We left the shop and I played it down as I wanted to plan the proposal and for it to be a surprise’ enthused Steven.

The engagement ring

A platinum diamond solitaire from Biagio’s collection, I raided my savings for the ring that Amanda had tried on when we visited that weekend.

Why Biagio for the engagement ring?

Amanda was so keen on the jewellery from Biagio. I intimated perhaps looking around for another ring, which she said would be ok, but she had really fallen in love with the Biagio ring!

Make it big and detailed on those long, hazy, summer days, draw inspiration from your favourite pendant trinkets, take your signature style and go grande. Autumn/Winter 17 is seeing the rebirth in popularity of pearls and coloured gemstones. Gone are the days of the pearl being seen as the buttoned-up, boring and somewhat prim spinster-aunt of gems, where the only gem worth flaunting was a diamond. The new mood in pearls is heritage-inspired but bohemian with multiple layers of long strand draped over diaphaneous dresses, add contrast with a leather biker jacket. Wind a strand of pearls round your wrist several times and you could have just drifted of Mulberry’s AW17 catwalk.

Coloured gemstones too are back with a bang. Big gemstones in a rainbow of hues graced the disco-inspired collections of Saint Laurent and Gucci, whilst this season’s other big trend for all things mystical, picks out an array of gemstones chosen for their meaning, talismanic qualities or proposed healing abilities. All of which opens up a diversity of palette and choice not seen as strongly since the 70’s.

And these are trends that aren’t going anywhere soon.

Every September the movers and shakers of the jewellery industry get together at Olympia in London for the International Jewellery London event. IJL is the foremost place for designers, including our friend Mr. Fei Liu, to showcase their new collections to buyers, collectors and the press. It is also THE place to discover what the fashionistas forecast will be big in the forthcoming season, so naturally the Biagio team hot-footed it down there to give you a sneak peek behind the curtains of the show at the hottest trends for Spring/Summer 2018. The good news is that pearls and coloured gemstones look set to continue their takeover of our jewellery boxes into SS18, so if you haven’t yet updated your jewels there’s still plenty of time. Let us help you revamp your wardrobe with these ‘en pointe’ pieces:

From buckles and beads to lace and pearls, if you’re looking to buy bracelets then here’s our ultimate guide on what to wear on your wrist now.

Buckles

Buckles are big news with the likes of Coach, Carven and Versus Versace all putting buckles on the catwalk back in the spring, and this trend looks set to stay through autumn and winter. Fancy breaking in on the buckle trend, Uno de 50 hits the right note with fastening on their Choper bracelet:

Multi-strands and stacks:

Chunky chokers and solid cuffs seem to be a staple accessory of recent years and they’re not going anywhere soon, however we’re starting to see more delicate multi-stranded pieces make their way onto the scene as an alternative. Whether it’s one piece that combines various strands together or many different pieces worn stacked or layered, this is one to watch.

Try layering these delicate strands together to get the look:

Geometric:

Finally, geometric shapes have been around as a trend for a few years now, with designers using bold, brightly coloured plastics and enamels blended with minimalist styles, but this style is taking on a more refined tone via the use of precious metals and subtle shapes as seen in Calvin Klein’s rose-gold take on the trend here:

50{+}Trendwatch: The New Mood For Autumn/Winter 2017{+}NULL{+}NULL{+}NULL{+}NULL{+}trendwatch-new-mood-for-autumn-winter-2017{+}NULL{+}NULL{+}NULL{+}NULL{+}NULL{+}

Autumn/Winter 17 offers such a bounty of diverse trends that it’s hard to imagine there not being a style for every taste. We’ve already witnessed and noted the rebirth in popularity of pearls and coloured gemstones, but there are also strong trends towards more minimalist designs, with futurism and the clean lines of geometry and futurism leading the way.

As we’ve seen in a previous posts, pearls are back in a big way. The new mood in pearls draws on trend for heritage-inspired fashion, with tweeds and checks the order of the day, but we’re not talking standard, old-fashioned single short strands anymore. Pearls have been given a fresher, looser yet more decadent turn of phrase. Layer up long strands of pearls or wear multiple stranded chokers with cameos, mix with gold chains and a feature pendant or add plentifully to wrists, but above all aim for effortless and artful and you’ll have unlocked the key to mastering this trend. Let this lustrous wonder rekindle your love of pearls:

width=500 height=500 />

Soiree pearl & black spinel bracelet by Claudia Bradby, £165

Coloured gemstones too are back with a bang, thanks in part to the disco-inspired collections of Saint Laurent and Gucci. Jewellery here is big, bold and unashamedly glitzy. Pieces will need to compete with glitterball boots and huge hair, so they’ll need to hold their own, whilst staying on the right side of the disco vibe. We’re talking more ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and Studio 54 than Charlie’s Angels. This ‘Saturday Night’ sparkler is a dance-floor hit:

18ct diamond and morganite ring, £3,470

Perhaps the biggest, most progressive trend of the season pertains to ears, and that’s the ‘mismatch’. The premise is a simple one; take two completely different pairs of earrings and wear one of each. It works best when each earring is of a contrasting shape and style. It also lends itself well to incorporating the geometric and space-age inspired styles that we’ve seen trending in the pages of fashion bibles like Vogue and Elle. Try the trend with these lobe-loving designs :

Titanium galaxy earrings, £75

Not for you the pic n’ mix look? Maybe this next fashionable form will unlock the key to your heart. Yes, key symbols as pendants, charms and even earrings are huge this season, as seen at Marc Jacobs, Balceniaga and Maison Margiela.

Alguna abrira necklace by Uno de 50, £155

Our final ‘fall’ flourish continues to channel the glamour of the Art Deco era, a theme that’s been growing in popularity since the release of Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 version of The Great Gatsby (which famously won an OSCAR for it’s costume designs). This season sees roaring 20’s style really hit it’s stride, taking place front and centre of shows such as Miu Miu, where it was particularly highlighted in necklace designs, but also heralded the return to favour of brooches, a form of adornment that all but vanished from our jewellery boxes in recent years. Let your inner flapper loose with this deco design:

Sapphires are the most precious and durable of all the blue stones; only diamond is harder.

Sapphires come in a variety of colours, not just blue. In fact they belong to the same family (corundum) as ruby, the only difference is the colour. Whilst other colours of stone in this family are referred by their colour i.e. pink sapphire, only red coloured stones and the rarely found orange-pink shade have their own names, the orange-pink being known as Padparadscha or Lotus Sapphire. There is also a colour-changing sapphire which appears blue in natural light but turns to violet in artificial light.
