Trendwatch: Coloured Gemstones
There’s been a meteoric rise in the use of coloured gemstones, not only in engagement rings, but throughout the jewellery industry. ‘The Big Three’ (sapphires, rubies and emeralds) being the most sought-after, it is hardly surprising that these stunning stones adorn the ring finger of style icons such as the Duchess of Cambridge, Halle Berry and Jessica Simpson.
Although diamonds will always be popular with their powerful allure and unbeatable durability, coloured gemstones are hot on their heels and as their popularity rises, so too does their value, making them a great investment in the current market.
If you’re looking for a special piece of jewellery for everyday wear, it is crucial that you think about the stone’s hardness. If you think it will get a lot of wear and tear then sapphires or rubies are a good choice as they score a 9 on the Mohs Scale. Only diamonds have a higher score of 10. Whereas topaz scores an 8 and emeralds are 7.5 to 8. It is also important to take into account the setting of the gemstone as this can add extra protection.
The origin of coloured gemstones has a significant influence on the price too, with the most popular being Burmese rubies, Kashmir sapphires and Columbian emeralds. ‘Old material stones’ from depleted historic mines such as emeralds from Colombia are particularly desirable, due to their quality and there are only a finite amount on the market. One thing to bear in mind though, is that it is hard to evaluate the quality of a coloured gemstone as there is no formal grading system, unlike with diamonds, and there is no chemical test to decipher the origin or treatment. But, the most important thing to consider when picking a special piece of jewellery for you or your loved one is that you choose something that you love and that fits your budget.
There are a huge number of beautiful coloured stones to consider if you are looking for something meaningful. What about picking a piece that includes your birthstone for example this lovely Silver and amethyst bangle.
