Smoky Quartz
The best examples of this quartz are found in veins in igneous rocks. Ranging in colour from sherry yellow to dark brown, the stone’s smoky colour is possibly due to the quartz coming into contact with natural or artificial radioactive minerals at some stage in its creation, although the stone is not radioactive in itself. The national gemstone of Scotland, it has been used in tools, ritual objects, decoration and jewellery since the times of the Druids, and Cairngorm is the name given to smoky quartz found in Scotland.
