Diamonds are my passion
Date: 2009-12-18
Entreprenuer Biagio Patalano opened his first shop in Bicester at the height of the recession in the late 1980s - next to a wellknown high street jewellers. A high risk strategy.
In the early years he focused on building a rapport with people in the jewellery trade - now Biagio is on first-name terms with many of the top names in jewellery.
He pursued his dream and now has a shop richly stocked with rare and exclusive gemstones - tanzanite, rubies, emeralds and coloured sapphires all twinkling and mesmerizing.
An abundance of gold, white gold, platinum, Gucci, Armani, DKNY, D&G jewellery and watches.
Biagio said:”‘I think the business works because of my passion for jewellery, which I have had since I was a child. I simply cannot imagine doing anything else. To me it is a lifelong vocation, and a creative desire that has
always been with me.”
In the 1990s, the opportunity arose to develop a second shop in Thame. With two stores, Biagio’s ambition doubled. Biagio realised he would need an experienced manager to lead the development in Thame, and after a chance meeting, he employed Peter Thomas, a man who has had 35 years experience in the trade as well as the passion and energy for his craft that Biagio was looking for.
Regional and national business awards confirmed the success of Biagio’s approach to retailing, as his business was named Retailer of the Year in 2000 and Team of the Year in 2002.
Today his team of 16 staff are a testimony of his special rapport with people. Three have been with him for 11 years. He employs two goldsmiths for design and repair and a horologist.
Education and learning has become an integral part of the business. All team members attend courses and many have achieved the Professional Jewellers Diploma after three years study.
In a further development, Biagio decided to create a core team of diamond specialists, not only to assist the customer but also to enhance the new range of loose diamonds. Both the diamonds and the specialist training come directly from Antwerp, the diamond centre of the world.
Biagio finds that people often ask for their own commission. “They are looking for something special, personal and individual, and want to create their own design. We pride ourselves on being completely flexible.” he said.
“We believe we can create their perfect piece and have a discerning collection of loose stones for clients to see. Our sources in the diamond industry are excellent and will only provide us with the finest diamonds with absolute accuracy.”
“Diamonds are my passion,” Biagio explained. “I particularly enjoy creating something new out of the old.” “The immense reward is from rejuvenating a family piece to suit the person and knowing it will then be worn and enjoyed rather than hidden away – to me, that is so exciting.”
BIAGIO has created a portfolio of events this year for his customers to enjoy. Each event is designed for family and friends to experience a different area of jewellery.
He said: “I am delighted to have teamed-up with London jewellery designers, specialists in wedding rings and jewellery and valuation experts to present a tantalising collection of events.
“We look forward to welcoming you to share in the experience at our events this year”.
